NW Hoops: Recruiting Wrap-Up

The early signing period for college basketball recruits wrapped up last week.  Here is a quick summary looking at NW schools and athletes:

Oregon Ducks – EJ Singler & Jeremy Jacob.  Oregon signed two SF’s early to add to an excellent 2008-2009 Freshman class.  Don’t have much feedback on either player.  Singler averaged 20-11 during his junior year at South Medford.  Jacob was a former Georgia commit who is averaging 15-11 for what is apparently one of the top JUCO teams in the nation.

Oregon State Beavers – Roberto Nelson & Joe Burton.  In what can only be considered a coup for new OSU coach Craig Robinson, the Beavers nabbed two highly regarded recruits.  Nelson, who is listed on ESPN’s Top 100 Recruits (#16 SG) and Burton (#11 C) were both highly sought after.  Nelson turned down apparent offers from UCLA and Florida while Burton spurned Gonzaga and Marquette.  Robinson is happy.

The Washington schools after the jump.

Washington Huskies – Abdul Gaddy, Clarence Trent, C.J. Wilcox, & Charles Garcia.  UW hauls in easily the finest NW (and one of the best in the nation) recruiting class.  Abdul Gaddy (#2 PG) is considered one of the top players in the entire nation.  He is joined on ESPN’s Top 100 Recruit list by Trent (#14 PF).  Wilcox is an excellent athlete who led the state of Utah in scoring last year as a junior.  Garcia, a PF for Riverside CC average 16-9 last year.

Washington State Cougars – Xavier Thames, David Chadwick, Anthony Brown, & Brock Motum.  Wazzu hauls in a deep, if not top-heavy class highlighted by Thames (#45 SG), Chadwick (#56 PF), and Brown (#93 SF), all top 100 at their position as ranked by ESPN.com.  Motum is a 6′9″ PF out of Australia.

Gonzaga Bulldogs – Samuel Dower & Mangisto Arop.  Gonzaga’s class is fairly non-descript.  Dower is ranked by ESPN.com as the #29 Center in his class while Arop appears to be somewhat of a project.  Arop, a shooting guard, is a native of the Sudan now living in Canada.

The ones that got away – Oregon: Mike Moser (UCLA).  Washington: Peyton Siva (Louisville), Aaron Dotson (LSU), Steven Bjornstad (Nevada), Eric Hutchinson (Montana).  Over all, a great year for recruiting in the state of Washington and a very mediocre year in Oregon.

Mangisto Arop was bumped up from a 3 star recruit to a 4 star recruit and sounds like he should be good. Elias Harris is going to help the frontcourt out tremendously, along with Dower, as GU tries to bounce back from the loss of Heytvelt, Downs and Ira Brown.
One named not mentioned is Bol Kong. Another guy from Sudan who moved to Canada and is committed to GU awaiting his Visa. They are supposed to be recruiting Guy-Marc Michel pretty hard (2010). That could give them 5 foreign born players on their roster in 2010.
One guy the Zags missed out on is Brock Osweiler who backed out of his commitment to GU to play quarterback at Arizona State.
